Manchester United are looking in imperious form right now, with Jose Mourinho seemingly finding the right formula that is making the Red Devils tick. A large portion of that is down to having a large playing squad, meaning several footballers are getting plenty of minutes across four different competitions.
However, one man who hasn’t really been playing at all is Luke Shaw, and that definitely comes as a real surprise to me as I believe he’s the most talented left-back in our current playing squad.
There has finally been some good news for the 21-year-old though, as Jose Mourinho has told reporters that Luke Shaw is finally ready to come back and play ‘without limitations’.
“He’s ready to play now,” Jose Mourinho said. “He’s ready to play so now you can find [it] natural if he plays on Thursday, he plays Sunday or next Wednesday. He’s now working without limitations so now, he’s ready.
“He is ready but it’s a position we have other options [in] too so it’s one of the positions where they have to fight, they have to compete, they have to show quality and stability in their performances to be in the team.”
We don’t really have any other natural left-backs in the squad aside from Shaw, and that has really showed at times. Daley Blind is very limited in the attacking third despite having excellent positional sense, and Matteo Darmian is predominantly right-footed and that has been a real issue.
With that said, Shaw doesn’t really have an awful lot of time to convince Jose Mourinho that he’s good enough to play here. Once the gaffer makes his mind up, it takes an awful lot to prove him wrong and the former Southampton left-back has a real job on his hands.
We’re in January now, and if he doesn’t buck his ideas up before the end of the season then he could well be out of the door. Manchester United need that guy who can be relied upon, and niggling injuries definitely haven’t helped his case this campaign.
That doesn’t matter to Jose Mourinho and the harsh reality is that there is no room for sentiment in football, and Shaw will be out of the door if he cannot get himself fit.
he ball is in your court now, Luke, and you’ve got about five months to save your Manchester United career.
