Manchester United are considering a move for want away Everton star Ross Barkley according to a report by Daily Mail. The England international has just a year left on his contract with Everton and has so far rejected the offer of a new deal. His contractual saga has seen him linked with moves from Tottenham, Chelsea and now Manchester United.
Everton reportedly want £50m for the player despite he having just a year left on his current contract. According to the report by Mail, Manchester United and the other clubs interested in the player are yet to make an offer but he is certainly drawing attention from some of the big clubs in England.
I believe Everton will be forced to sell him come August should he continue to refuse their offer of a new contract. They are a smart club, they won’t want him to go on a free transfer a year from now. Should he continue to refuse Everton’s contract offer, they are most likely to lower than asking price for him. I believe if Mourinho really wants him, he can get him for as low as £25m.
The good thing is that Chelsea and Tottenham who are also interested in him do not have any real immediate need for him and judging by Daily Mail’s reports, the clubs are ready to play a waiting game. Something that could work in favour of Manchester United in the end.
Barkley is certainly a quality player but do Manchester United really need him? My main problem with him is his inconsistency. Although he is still just 23-year-old and could improve under a manager like Jose Mourinho but he may well not improve at all.
Another problem I have with the potential signing of Ross Barkley is the fact that we really do not need a player in the mould of Barkley. What we need right now is a move defensive minded midfielder. Someone like Matic.
