Michael Carrick is sadly coming to the end of his footballing career and that means Manchester United need to find a replacement for him and ideally this summer. Although I believe he will play some part in United’s campaign next season, I do not believe he is a player that can be relied upon for long periods any longer.
His age is beginning to tell on his body, and it appears the club are aware of this and are already making moves to bring in a player who is capable of replacing him in the team. According to various reports, we are after Tottenham’s Eric Dier. The Englishman is valued at about £40 million, but according to a report by the Sun, Jose Mourinho is ready to pay such an amount to get his man this summer.
Eric Dier is very much like Carrick. He doesn’t care about doing anything extraordinary on the field but will do what you ask of him. He has become a regular for England and Tottenham in the last few months which is testament to how much he has developed. But is Dier what United need?
We have Marouane Fellaini, Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera in similar roles, and in all honestly, do not need someone like Dier. I agree Carrick should be replaced, but for £40 million, we can surely do better than Dier to be honest. It will be great if Daniel Levy could lower his demands, but we all know he won’t and for this reason I would be happy if Manchester United look elsewhere.
Schalke 04’s Leon Goretzka could be a perfect signing for us. The fact that he is stalling on a new contract with the Bundesliga outfit means we could potentially get him cheap this summer. He has just one year left on his current contract and as such Schalke won’t want to lose him on a free transfer in 12 months’ time so could be open to selling him this summer.
Goretzka has already been linked with a £20m move to Arsenal, but knowing Arsene Wenger, he will want to be smart with the transfer fee and that could give us a chance to move for the German. Unlike Wenger, Mourinho won’t penny pinch which could be helpful should the club decide they want to make a move for Goretzka.
